Audio and translations

Tap a card's speaker icon to hear the word you are learning with text-to-speech (TTS). Word audio is free. Audio and extra translations for examples and definitions require Flexi Premium.

Listen to a card

  1. Open your deck, then open a card.

  2. Tap the speaker icon beside the word to hear it.

  3. With Premium, tap the speaker icon beside an example or definition to hear that text too.

You can also use the speaker controls during a study session. Audio uses the card’s learning language and, where available, the deck’s Dialect setting. Choose the dialect when creating a deck or open the deck’s gear button → Deck settings → Dialect. See the available dialects.

Translate an example or definition

With Premium, tap the globe or language icon beside an example or definition to see its translation in the deck’s Translation language.

This is separate from the card’s Translation field, which stores the meaning of the word or phrase itself. Changing the deck’s translation language does not rewrite that saved field. See Learning and translation languages to change the language, or Edit a card to correct a saved translation.

Control automatic playback during study

  1. Start a study session.

  2. Open the session menu.

  3. Turn Auto-play word on or off.

  4. With Premium, turn Auto-play example on or off.

For example, turn on Auto-play word and leave Auto-play example off if you want to hear the word without listening to the full example each time.

On iOS and Android, automatic playback starts after you tap Show answer. There is no separate automatic-playback setting for definitions; use the definition's speaker icon when you want to hear it.

If you cannot hear audio

Try these checks in order:

  1. Tap the word's speaker icon directly. This helps distinguish a playback problem from an automatic-playback setting.

  2. Check your device's media volume and whether sound is going to connected headphones or a Bluetooth speaker.

  3. Check your internet connection, then try the speaker icon again. Audio may need to load online.

  4. If word audio works but example or definition audio does not, check that you have Premium access.

If audio still fails, note which card and field are affected and whether the problem happens on other cards. Those details will help when you contact support.

FAQ

Can I listen offline?

Keep an internet connection available when using audio. Do not rely on every card's audio being available offline.
