Choose the language you want to learn as your Target language and a language you understand as your Translation language. The translation language is used for the word’s meaning and, with Premium, translations of examples and definitions. Flexi’s menu language is a separate setting.
Choose the right language pair
For example, if you speak English and want to learn Spanish, choose Spanish as the target language and English as the translation language. Your cards will teach Spanish vocabulary with English translations.
Choose a language pair when you create a deck or follow the welcome steps.
Choose the translation language you can understand comfortably. It does not have to be your first language.

Change languages for a deck
A deck is a collection of vocabulary cards with its own language settings.
To change the translation language, open the deck and select the gear button to open Deck settings, then choose Translation language. This changes the language used for new translations; it does not rewrite the word translations saved on existing cards. Edit those cards if their saved translations need to change.
You cannot change the target language of an existing deck. To learn a different language, create another deck with that target language.
Choose a dialect
Some learning languages offer a Dialect setting when you create a deck or open its Deck settings:
-
English: United States or United Kingdom.
-
Spanish: Spain or United States.
-
Portuguese: Brazil or Portugal.
-
Chinese (Traditional): Mandarin or Hong Kong (Cantonese).
Android shows these as US/UK, ES/US, BR/PT, and CMN/HK. The dialect is used for generated content and spoken audio; it does not rewrite cards you have already saved.
Which features depend on the language?
Written pronunciation
Written pronunciation is a guide to how a word sounds. Automatic pronunciation guides are available for these languages and systems:
-
English, Spanish, German, Dutch, Czech, Finnish, and Romanian: IPA, a set of phonetic symbols
-
Japanese: kana
-
Mandarin Chinese: Pinyin or Zhuyin
-
Cantonese with the Hong Kong dialect: Jyutping
For Mandarin Chinese, choose Pinyin or Zhuyin in Deck settings → Personalization → Pronunciation system. This is the only language with a choice between two written pronunciation systems. Other supported languages use the system listed above.
For Japanese, kana shows the sounds using Japanese characters, rather than Latin letters (romaji). If automatic pronunciation is unavailable for your language, you can add a pronunciation guide yourself when editing a card.
Ready-made vocabulary sets
Flexi’s ready-made vocabulary catalog is for learning English. For other supported languages, create cards from your own words or phrases.
Audio
Use a card’s speaker button to hear its word. Word audio is free; listening to examples and definitions requires Premium. For languages with dialect options, audio uses the deck’s chosen dialect. Listening is separate from the written pronunciation guide. See Audio and translations for playback and translating an example or definition.
