Flexi helps you learn vocabulary with flashcards. Each card is a word or phrase to practise, and a deck is a collection of cards for the language you’re learning.
To get started, create a deck, add a few cards, and try a study session. After that, spaced repetition brings each card back for review at intervals based on your answers. Basic card creation and studying are free.
1. Choose or create a deck
When you first open Flexi, it can guide you through choosing your languages and creating your first cards. If you already have a deck, open it and continue with the next step.
To create a deck yourself, open Decks. On iPhone and iPad, select Add if your list is empty, or the Create button. On Android, select the + button.
In New deck, choose your Target language and Translation language, then select Create.
For example, choose Spanish to learn Spanish vocabulary and English to read its translations. For the full list and help choosing, see Learning and translation languages.
2. Create your first cards
-
Open your deck and select Add card.
-
Enter a word or short expression, then select Continue.
-
Look through the suggestions. Check the translation, example, and definition to choose the meaning you want to learn.
-
Select Add card to save it. To keep several suggested meanings, select them and use Add selected.
Start with a few useful words from a lesson, book, or conversation. If you already created cards during the welcome steps, you can use those. For more detail, see Create a card.
3. Try a study session
Open your deck and select Study.
For each card:
-
Read the prompt and try to remember the answer before revealing it.
-
Select Show answer and compare it with what you remembered.
-
Choose the rating that matches your recall.
The buttons depend on your review mode:
-
Quick: choose Again if you could not remember, or Know if you remembered.
-
Precise: choose Again if you could not remember; Hard if you remembered with difficulty; Good if you remembered with some effort; or Easy if it came to you easily.
Use Again, rather than Hard, when you did not know the answer. It is fine to need another look at a new word.
Keep going until the session ends. Study controls also include typing answers and correcting a rating.
4. Come back for your next reviews
Spaced repetition means reviewing a word at intervals rather than repeating your whole deck every day. Flexi uses your ratings to decide when each card returns. A difficult card may come back soon, even in the same session; a familiar one can wait longer.
Come back regularly, open your deck, and select Study when cards are ready. For today shows new cards and reviews. When there is nothing to study, you can finish for now—your cards are still saved, and later reviews will help you keep them in memory.
Study reminders can help you remember to return, and widgets let you check your study activity without opening Flexi.
FAQ
Can I skip the welcome steps?
Yes. Select Skip if you prefer to get started yourself. Then check Decks: depending on how far you got, Flexi may already have saved a deck or some cards. If not, create a deck and add words using the steps above.
Why aren’t all my cards appearing in a session?
Flexi follows each card’s review schedule and your New cards per day setting. You do not need to restart your deck after finishing today’s cards. Return when more reviews or new cards are ready.
I have studied my new cards. How can I review them again?
Return to your deck and select Study when cards are ready for review. Flexi uses spaced repetition to schedule each card based on your answers, so you do not need to repeat every card straight away. There is currently no separate free-practice mode outside that schedule.
